ChatGPT image upload requirements
OpenAI currently documents a 20 MB limit per image for ChatGPT image inputs. ChatGPT accepts static PNG, JPEG/JPG, and non-animated GIF files. This is separate from the 512 MB general file ceiling and from API limits. If an image is too large or unsupported, check its bytes and format locally, then compress or convert a copy before uploading.

What to do when an image is too large or unsupported
- 1Confirm the actual byte size and format. A familiar file extension is not a substitute for inspecting the file.
- 2If the image is over 20 MB, make a smaller copy and inspect it visually. Compression can change detail and file size.
- 3If the format is unsupported, convert a copy to PNG or JPG and review transparency, color, text, and important edges.
- 4Recheck the result, then use ChatGPT's own upload control. Being under 20 MB does not override account, usage, or service limits.
