How to bring a photo to life with a short clip

When a clip works better than a still

A still image holds one instant. A short clip shows the change around that instant: a laugh arriving, a curtain lifting, two glasses meeting in a toast. Choose a clip when the feeling depends on that change. Choose a still look when the moment is complete in one frame, or when the image has to print, frame, or sit in a layout.

Choose a photo that moves well

• A clear subject. One person, pet, or focal point gives the motion a place to happen.
• Room for motion. Leave space around hair, hands, or sky so movement is not cut off at the edge of the frame.
• Good light. Even, readable light keeps faces and details steady as the camera moves.
• A calm, sharp source. An uncluttered photo in focus gives the clip less to reinvent.

Each clip starts from exactly one photo and keeps the people and setting in it. Crop out anyone who should not appear before you begin.

Pick a curated moment or write your own

Moments offers more than 100 curated beats, grouped into families. Each one sets a camera move, what the subject does, and the light and mood. Start there when one matches your photo. A smile breaking suits a relaxed portrait. Wind in hair suits an outdoor photo with open space. Snow starting to fall suits a winter scene.

Write your own moment when none fits. Keep it to a sentence or two that says what happens, how the camera moves, and what you hear.

Keep the clip believable

• Ask for one beat. A single action reads more naturally in 5 or 10 seconds than a chain of events.
• Match the motion to the photo. A seated portrait suits a smile or a glance, not a sprint.
• Stay inside the scene. A clip has no cuts and adds no new people or objects, so describe changes that can happen within the photo.
• Treat sound as atmosphere. Clips carry ambient sound, such as rain, surf, or room tone. Dialogue and lip-sync are not part of a moment by default.

Watch the finished clip on a phone, at the size people will see it. Check faces and hands first, then the background. If something drifts, simplify the beat or try a calmer photo.

What a moment does not do

• It makes one clip from one photo. It does not edit a timeline or join several clips.
• It does not add music tracks or captions.
• It is not a Reels editor. Assemble longer posts in a video editor.
• It does not add dialogue or lip-sync by default.
• It runs on the web. Moments is not part of the Image API or MCP server.

Questions about bringing a photo to life

How long is a clip?

5 or 10 seconds. The free plan makes 5-second clips at 480p with a watermark. Paid plans unlock 10-second clips, sharper output up to 1080p, and clips without the watermark.

Can I add music to a clip?

A moment carries ambient sound that fits the scene, not a music track. To set a clip to music, download it and add the track in a video editor.

Can I use several photos in one clip?

No. Each clip comes from one photo. Make a clip for each photo, then join them in a video editor if the story needs a sequence.

Will the clip change the person in my photo?

A moment is built to keep the person and scene from your photo while they move. Review faces and hands in the result, and try a sharper, better-lit photo if a detail drifts.
